Snoop Lion has voiced his opinion on the acceptance of homosexuality in hip hop and while he doesn’t have a problem with the idea of an openly gay rapper, he thinks the genre isn’t ready to embrace an MC with a sexual orientation that isn’t straight.
According to Snoop, the root of the issue is that the Rap generation is rooted an masculine mindset. “I don’t have a problem with it. It’s the mentality of the Rap generation. The mentality of the Rap generation is masculine. Macho. That’s like having a football player playing in games, and all of a sudden at the end of the season he tells you, ‘Hey, you know I’m gay, guys. I like you, too.’ It’s a different feeling as opposed to saying it up front and early and you dealing with it,” Snoop told VH1’s Big Morning Buzz Live.
Snoop added that hip hop is beginning to change but it’s still too soon for homosexuality to be accepted. “It’s like, this Rap game was created off [masculinity], created off a different stigma. We were brainwashed not to accept certain things. But as we get older and we learn, we appreciate life. I feel like, in the near future, it could happen. But not right now,” said Snoop.
Snoop also explained that he’s not about to hold someone’s orientation against them and he respects the decisions of others. “People are people no matter what their preference is, and that’s what we have to understand as humans, that we can’t dictate our life off of what someone else loves or doesn’t love. You have to live your life for who you are, and you have to respect other peoples’ decision and give them their space,” said Snoop.
