Roc Nation emcee J. Cole sits down to discuss is recently released ‘Power Trip’ single, comparing it to Justin Timberlake’s “Cry Me A River.”
Although we were originally hoping to get our hands on J. Cole’s sophomore album during 2012, ‘Born Sinner’ is definitely on the way for 2013. If ‘Power Trip’ is any indication of what we can expect from the full length LP, then we can’t wait to hear the project in its entirety.
J. Cole teamed up with Miguel for the lead single from his sophomore effort, and recently sat down with the team at MTV to discuss the song. Cole explains that the single hits you in a “certain kinda way” that reminds him of the way he felt when he first Justin Timberlake’s ‘Cry Me A River.’
“I get excited about that; it’s an opportunity to change things,” he said. “It’s almost like the first time I heard ‘Cry Me a River,’ Justin Timberlake. The minute that came on … It hit you a certain kinda way. That was the exciting part.”
J. Cole also revealed that it wasn’t a clear cut decision for releasing ‘Power Trip’ as the lead single, all the more reason for us to look forward to this album.
“‘Power Trip’ had that newer sound; they both have a new sound, but ‘Power Trip’ absolutely, you couldn’t point to any song on the radio and be like, ‘This sounds like that,’ ” he said. “Everything about it, from the beat to even the way I’m flowing — you never really heard me rap so sleepily. I really did those verses in my crib and just loved the way they felt.”
