2 Chainz has a chance to take home the Grammy Award for ‘Rap Album of the Year’ for ‘Based on a T.R.U. Story’ which dropped during the summer and took a minute to thank some of the artists that helped him get where he is.
2 Chainz explained that he had no idea his debut album would end up earning a nomination and added that he was honored by the nod. “I can’t say, ‘I told you so.’ All I can say is that I’m honored. …I didn’t know. Honestly, I didn’t know,” 2 Chainz told DJ Drama.
2 Chainz immediately reached out to Kanye West and Drake who he feels helped support the growth of his career over the past year. “I definitely texted the big homie [Kanye West], I told ‘Ye that I appreciated him giving me the opportunity to get on ‘Mercy,’ because that song was huge for me. And the homie Drake, me and him collaborated on ‘No Lie’ that’s already platinum. It’s a few people I feel assisted my campaign that I wanted to tell I appreciate on the way up,” said 2 Chainz.
Of course, 2 Chainz will be in competition with Drake for the award as well as Lupe Fiasco, Nas, The Roots and Rick Ross. But even if his debut doesn’t win the award, he could still grab an honor for his part in ‘Mercy’ which is up for ‘Best Rap Performance’ as well as ‘Best Rap Song.’
